They went to a nightclub on Bloor Street in Toronto. Eventually she quit the factory job, got married and started a family. Sadly, her hus- band and their three children have all predeceased her. Last year, Doris visited the Port Perry Legion to donate the war med- als received by her husband, who served in the Air Force in Burma. As well, she gave them the medals earned by her father-in-law and her Grandpa Stewart, to be properly taken care of, in their honour. Unlike other veterans who trav- elled abroad during the war, Doris remained in Ontario. In later years, she satisfied her wanderlust. Doris has enjoyed tours to all of the main cities in Europe; her favourite place being Venice, Italy. She loved the gondolas and water taxi boats, which transported her to restaurants for fine cuisine. She has fond memories of the fresh shrimp and pasta dishes served in Italy. “I’ve done everything I’ve ever wanted to do,” said the 90-year- old veteran. “There’s nothing on my bucket list.” Doris, who moved to Port Perry Villa earlier this year, is very creative and helpful. She participates in the art classes held at the Villa, plus she joined the knitting club. An enthu- siastic gardener, she also waters the plants. “I like working with flowers,” Doris says. “And I like to keep busy.” If you see Doris Swan on Remem- brance Day, November 11, or on her 91st birthday, November 12, please take a minute to wish her well, and thank her for her important contribu- tion during the Second World War!
