Veteran Lorne Shaw, “a great guy with great health,” is 92 years old and he still carries the flag in the colour party! Around 10:15 a.m. on November 11th, the annual Remembrance Day service is held at Scugog library. Afterward, everyone marches to the township office where a luncheon is served. Dave pointed out the importance of today’s youth learning the history of our wars. Recently, some local students joined the veterans for one of their monthly lunches. This provided them with the opportunity to hear their fascinating stories firsthand and ask questions. About 15 – 20 local veterans usually attend. “They all had a good time,” Dave said, “the students will be invited again, especially before and after the Port Perry High School trip to Vimy in 2017. Seeing Vimy Ridge firsthand is a real education”. The Port Perry Legion also hosts an annual veterans’ dinner on the Saturday before Remembrance Day, to hon- our the war veterans. There’s always a good turnout and a special presentation. NEW MEMBERS WELCOME Associate membership in the Port Perry Legion is encouraged. Dave called it “another first for Port Perry” when the Veterans’ Sons (and then the Daughters) was formed, back in the day when he first signed up. One of their main purposes was fundraising. Dave tells an interesting story about Dale and Don McNenly, who travelled from Scugog back to their home in Yellowknife, stopping at Legions and showing their Sons membership cards along the way. That was some 40 years ago. Dominion Command called, wondering what this was all about. Eventually an Associate Membership was established for all Legion branches. With the loss of so many veterans as the years pass by, Dave noted the im- portance of others in the community joining the Legion to keep the traditions and memories alive. LEST WE FORGET.
