On his 21st birthday, Dave’s dad encouraged him to join the local Legion. This led to Dave’s long 46- year in- volvement and he currently serves as President. Dave’s most recent Legion project is being part of a committee of three, including Chuck Mercier and Jane Twohey. They are charged with the task of the veteran banner project. “The BIA and the township of Scugog have both been very cooperative”, Dave commented. In 2015, the veteran banner program started out small. The Port Perry Legion installed five banners last year, including one dedicated to the Unknown Soldier, near the Scugog township office. This year, Queen Street is all decked out with 31 beautiful commemorative banners. In the case of banners dedicated to veterans whose rela- tives own local businesses, there was a special effort made to install these banners near their stores. GOOD PHOTOGRAPHS Roy was a soldier in the army in World War II. “The most challenging thing about having my Dad’s banner produced, was getting a proper photograph” said Dave. All he had was an old picture of Roy and his buddy standing side by side. Thanks to the talented staff at PP Print, Dave ended up having a nice, clear 5x7 photo of his dad, alone, to appear on his banner. Visit Queen Street to admire the Legion Veteran Banners! Lest we forget Jane Twoey and Dave Durham shown holding a banner that is extremely close to Dave’s heart – that of his father who served in the army in WWII.
