The G-Mom group is one of over 240 Grandmother-to-Grandmother groups across Canada and we are over 10,000 strong. Since the start of the G-to-G campaign in 2006 we have raised over 23 million dollars to help rebuild Africa. Stephen Lewis organized the original gathering in 2006 when Toronto hosted the Aids Conference. He invited 200 Canadian Grandmothers and organized the arrival of 100 African Grannies. At this time there was much grief and many of the women were broken with sadness as most had lost many members of their families due to the Aids Pandemic. We Canadian Grannies learned from the African women and discovered how to best help them. They needed grief counselling, food and clothes for their orphans, support to start income generating projects and human resources support to guide them as they worked tirelessly. At the start of the campaign the theme was, “Ease the Pain”, but since that time we have focused on, “Turning the Tide on Aids”. All of our projects receive the money directly from the foundation to be sure that goals are being met and we are happy to report that the orphans in our care do go to school and many are now going to University and learning how to give back to their communities. They are becoming more independent and aware of their Human Rights while continuing to strengthen their countries and support the women.
