The Scugog Council for the Arts (SCA) is pulling back the curtain on another spectacular tribute to the arts in Scugog. This year’s Mayor’s Gala for the Arts takes place on Thursday November 3rd and will pay tribute to Scugog’s rich and varied theatre arts scene. It will also raise significant funds for the SCAto continue to support local artists and arts in all media. The 2016 Gala theme, “centre stage” will bring four local perform- ing arts groups to the centre of attention. The Borelians, Theatre 3x60, SCS Musicals and Cadenza Productions are busy rehearsing for their appearance in front of the Gala’s glittering guest list. “There’s so much talent here in Scugog. Last year we presented the winners of the first ever Scugog Tribute Song Contest to great applause, even a standing ovation. This year our guests will enjoy the high calibre of our lo- cal stage performers,” said co-chair Birgitta MacLeod. “And of course there will be a gourmet dinner, live auction of unique ex- periences and more.” Theatre 3×60 is the newest player on the local theatre scene. Founded in 2013 by Joan Etienne and Carey Nicholson, Theatre 3x60 has brought live theatre to more than 2,500 elementary and high school students, developed affordable unique youth theatre training programs and launched Port Perry Summer Theatre and Durham Minifest theatre festivals. And that’s just for starters! SCS Musicals has been singing and dancing its way across the stage in Scugog for a cool forty years. You might remember them as the Scugog Choral Society, but with the new name there’s a fresh buzz of energy around SCS Musicals. Local theatre group, the Borelians, has had an even longer run than SCS Musicals. Since its first performance of You Can’t Take it With You in 1971, the Borelians have been bringing first-class entertainment to Scugog for over 45 years. This award-winning troupe will take to the Gala stage with a short original drama written by a member playwright. Between these stage veterans and the new guys, Cadenza Productions has been mounting summer mu- sical theatre at the Town Hall 1873 since 2004. Founder Carol Salamone hopes to expand Cadenza’s season in the coming years, to further engage and transport the local populace into the world of musical theatre. No doubt ticketholders at the Mayor’s Gala will be engaged and entertained in style by this group as well. Funds raised at the Mayor’s Gala for the Arts sup- port the community activities of the Scugog Council for the Arts, including Spark the Arts, a bursary program that awards seed funding twice a year. The 2016 Gala takes place on Thursday November 3rd at the Scugog Community Recreation Centre and is made possible with the financial investment of several key sponsors: Vos’ Independent Grocer, the Baagwating Community Association and Canadian Tire. Tickets are $125 each and now available online at scugogarts.ca or by calling Robin at the SCA at 905-982-2121.
