22 FOCUS - APRIL 2016 You may have read recently an article in the local newspapers or seen posters around the neighbour- hood announcing the potential formation of Port Perry PROBUS Club. Well it looks like it is well on its way to becoming a reality with a planned start in June this year. PROBUS is an acronym for the words professional and business and the main purpose of the clubs is to provide meetings and fellowship opportunities for like-minded retired and semi-retired people. The orga- nizations were originally spin-offs from Rotary Clubs however PROBUS is not a service organization it is non- sectarian and non-political. The focus is strictly to foster interests social events and friendships for seniors in their retirement years. Originating in the UK in 1966 PROBUS Clubs has grown to 300000 members in approximately 4000 clubs worldwide. Canada has 237 clubs with around 33000 members. In the Durham region alone there are five established clubs. Because most are exceeding member- ship capacity two new clubs are starting up one serving Scugog and the other in the Clarington municipality of Durham Region. The overwhelming response shows that an aging population is looking for social opportunities PROBUS members organize a range of ongoing activities such as hiking bridge euchre books theatre lunch and break- fast groups and art appreciation. The members them- selves decide on the activities and social events they wish to pursue. Social events might include theatre outings day trips to places of interest car fun rallies BBQs Christmas events and sometimes organized international vacations. The Port Perry planning team already has a contact list of 50 residents who have expressed interest in becoming a member. Most gratifying is the number of volunteers who have come forward to join the Management Teaminhelpingorganizeandruntheclub. Positions filled so far are President Treasurer Secretary Membership Chair Speakers Chair Group Interests Chair Newsletter Editor Website and House Chair. Volunteers are required for a Vice President and a Social Events Chair. The Whitby Brooklin PROBUS Club is sponsoring the formation of the Port Perry club. The Port Perry PROBUS Club is delighted that the Hope Church 14480 Old Simcoe Rd Port Perry has agreed to allow use of their facility for the clubs monthly meetings which will be held on the 3rd Tuesday of every month from 10 a.m. - noon with the foundation meeting and club start on June 21. Key dates to mark on your calendar are Tuesday May 10 Port Perry PROBUS Information and sign-up meeting Tuesday June 21 Port Perry PROBUS Foundation meeting Official Club Launch The club is named Port Perry PROBUS as this is where monthly meetings will be held however the club is open to all residents from Scugog Uxbridge areas and sur- rounding communities and you are encouraged to join.
