FOCUS - MARCH 2016 7 Ah the first sign that spring in Scugog is just around the corner This year Easter is coming especially early March 27 but Port Perrys Easter Bonnet Parade and Contest is not to be missed no matter the weather. This visual explosion of Easter pageantry is put on by the Church Chicks of the Port Perry United Church and is sponsored by local businesses Cakes by Stephanie and The Kids Cupboard. The event is entering its seventh year and has quickly become a cherished family event that is a thrill to watch or a chance to show off your creativity. Miss Twinkle Twinkle is portrayed by Alicia Sluggett and her sparkling ensemble is a nod to the fifties era. We like to keep it fresh and exciting for the kids by introduc- ing a new character each year says Pam Hollett who created the event. Since we are raising money for the childrens and teen sections of the library the Church Chicks decided to have the characters be named after nursery rhymes she adds. Miss Twinkle Twinkle joins veteran characters Bo Peep Pam Hollett Miss Muffet Jill McMullen Mary Mary Quite Contrary Cathy Pavlik- Griffen Red Riding Hood Brooke Dunn and Patty Cake Jodi Janwin. Their gowns span from the 17th to 20th cen- turies and all have been skillfully made by Jill McMullen. The event takes place on Sunday March 27 beginning at 12 noon in front of the Port Perry Post Office on Queen St. Registration will begin at 1130 a.m. and is by free- will donation to the Scugog Memorial Library. The Nutty Chocolatier Easter Egg Hunt starts at 1 p.m. immediately following the bonnet contest. Each registered participant gets a gourmet cupcake from Cakes by Stephanie and a prize ribbon care of The Kids Cupboard. Twenty large and highly sought-after prize ribbons will additionally be awarded in the follow- ing categories Co-chairs of the event Melissa Durward and Pam Hollett are guaranteeing good weather with your do- nation to the Scugog Library and will have hot chocolate on hand just in case. The hour always goes by quickly thanks to plethora of hats to view keen emceeing by Bo Peep and upbeat tunes which DJ Todd Soomre donates every year. The only hard part of the event rests on the shoulders of the judges. Mayor Tom Rowett will be the head judge along with writerchild advocate Laura Francis and Julie-Anne Gatto Gibbons of the Scugog Memorial Library. Again this year all Scugog elementary schools will participate in Crazy Hat Day on Thursday March 24. This program is headed by the Church Chicks and Scugog teacher Amy Killeen and allows kids to donate a toonie to wear their Easter Hat or hat of their choosing to school that day and help raise funds for their own childrens and teen area at the Scugog Library.
