Sundays 10 a.m. C o m m u n i t y C h u r c h Art for Refugef A unique art show and sale will be held at New Song Art Gallery 14460 Simcoe St. with an opening reception on February 27 from 2-5 p.m. including refreshments everyone welcome. There will be pieces for sale and a silent auction. All proceeds to help bring and settle two Syrian refugee families to Port Perry. The show will run for one month. Art for Refuge is an initiative of the Port Perry Refugee Support Group an inter-church community based group committed to welcoming two Syrian refugee families to our town. The group invites all artists experienced and novice alike to submit and donate works of art created around the theme of refuge and refugee. The art will be dis- played and either sold or auctioned off to raise funds. The event will also include a fanciful birdhouse sale featuring beautiful birdhouses created by local citizens and leaders alike all created to benefit the cause. We know that Port Perry and the surrounding area is full of really skillful artists. We have an art town so this idea seemed to make sense says Karen Stiller one of the organizers of the show and a member of the committee working to bring the families to Port Perry. We have heard back already from sev- eral artists who have shared they are at work on their creations. So we cant wait to see what is produced. Stiller notes that just as the event rests on the generosity of the artists who are donating the art success also depends on art lovers showing up to purchase the one of a kind art created for this very special purpose. People interested in donating art and viewing and buying art can visit www.newsongportperry.ca or email PPRefugeeSupportpowergate.ca for more details. The Port Perry Refugee Support Group formed in November when concerned citi- zens moved by the plight of Syrian refugees came together and decided to try to wel- come Syrian refugees to Port Perry. Five churches joined in along with many other community members who cared about the worse refugee crisis the world has seen since World War II and wanted to be involved. The group does not have an exact timeline for the arrival of the families but they are working with a refu- gee welcome centre in Toronto and being trained and supported by groups like the federally run Refugee Sponsorship Training Program. The group has held well-attended public meetings full of residents wanting to be involved in one of the action teams welcome and settlement housing and fundraising. Weve been so encouraged by the open minds and open hearts of the people of Port Perry says Stiller. Encouraged but not surprised. We know we live in a hospitable town full of generous people. And its been so great to sit in committee meetings where half of us are from a church and half of us are not and just work together across denomination and across beliefs and just do something to help other people in great need. The refugees who come to Port Perry will have undergone a rigorous screening process by the United Nations High Commission on Refugees as well as the Canadian government. They will have expressed their desire to come to Canada to begin a new life. The works of art being created now and sold February 27 for one month will play a small beautiful role in the creation of a new life for Syrian families says Stiller. We think that is pretty great. Dwelling a glass sculpture by Claire Anderson a graduate of Sheridan College Crafts and Design Glass Program. Claire has shown internationally and is currently working toward opening a studio of her own. Dwelling will be for sale at the Art for Refuge show.
