4 FOCUS - AUGUST 2015 the local arena on Tuesdays and the program includes education sessions and monitoring of activity. The first weekend of June Mike had to wear a heart monitor for a couple of days just to ensure that everything is functioning well. Doctors including cardiologist Dr. Nasser-Shariff of Lakeridge Health Port Perry keep tabs on him. The doctors and the medical centre in this town are outstanding Mike says. A retired high school teacher Mikes lifestyle centres around physical fitness cycling running jogging walking and now that the weather is nice golfing three or four times a week. He has switched his workouts from weight lifting to resistance training using those big rubber bands. The goal is to get his heart rate up to 110 - 120 beats per minute to strengthen his heart.Even though my heart is strong Mike pointed out that he needs to watch out for my sixty-one year old knees and back. Im even more fit than before Mike enthuses. Im just carrying on with my life making plans and feeling good. The Man of Steele credits the fact that he has always had a positive attitude as an asset in the recovery process. Hes down to one type of medication to take and when that is cut out Mike will be free to travel outside of Canada according to insurance regulations. Then hell be pursuing his Bucket List dream of an adventure trip to explore Australia and New Zealand. Mike and his wife Patsy who are the parents of a blended family of five grown sons are really looking forward to a destination wedding in Costa Rica for their son Jason Cottrells wedding in March 2016. But for now the Steeles are enjoying summer in Ontario which is beautiful and has a lot to offer Mike pointed out citing as examples getaways to Niagara-on- the-Lake Lake Muskoka and Sir Sams Lodge. For now Route 66 can wait. Patsy recently expressed interest in accompanying her husband to the driving range. She wants to golf with me Mike enthused. Patsy who has always been very supportive canvassed for the Heart and Stroke Foundation again this year and Mike expressed appreciation for the great generosity of the donors. Thanks to medical research he says that he is alive and well and able to help others by sharing his experience. Mike tells a story about sitting in his car at the Canadian Tire parking lot in Port Perry. Someone recognized him from his photo in Focus and then came up to him and said that he had seen the first feature article about Mikes quad bypass. The list of symptoms set off warning bells and this individual sought medical care. Three local people that Mike knows of and there could be more went to the doctor to get checked out after reading his article which contained the red flag warning signs of heart disease. That story in Focus magazine was all about educating people and saving lives and it worked he commented. It was a wake up call. People say I look great thats the feedback Mike concluded. Most importantly I feel great he says. The Man of Steele celebrated the three month anniversary of his operation by looking in the mirror and saying to himself You are still here He looks forward to doing the same thing at the six month mark and the one year mark and lots of other surgery anniversaries years into the future.
