20 FOCUS - AUGUST 2015 As the Scugog Hockey League SHL has grown so has its generosity in both dollars and spirit. Founded in the early 1980s as a non-contact recrea- tional outlet for men from Scugog Township the league had humble beginnings. What started with a group of four all-ages teams has expanded exponentially to a 22-club association with three age-dependent divisions. In 2001 however the growing hockey league began a tradition which would define it within the commu- nity for far more than simply sporting reasons. Three members of the league at that time Carl Fitzgerald Jim Beatty and Rick Sheehy organized a charity golf tournament said the events current-day Chair Rob Scott. That year the funds it raised were in support of a specific initiative but it has grown well beyond that point. The specific initiative was the construction of a second ice pad at the Scugog Arena. The results of the groups first fundraiser were instantly impressive. We committed to donate 40000 a year over the course of five years Rob continues and we met that goal. Flushed with the success of this effort the organiza- tion recognized the power of its fundraising muscle. Once our commitment to the new ice pad was finished we set our sights on other projects. The first one was another arena-based initiative the purchase of a new Zamboni. Then we branched off into community- oriented causes. The Scugog hospital and library soon joined the list of recipients. In the present day three local charities receive shares of the annual fundraiser Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Durham Scugog Community Care and the Durham Ride for Dad which supports prostate research. Rob himself took over as the golf tournaments Chair in 2006 and has led the event since then. Two unrelated events got me involved in running Scugog Hockey League fundraising produces above-par results They Putt . . .
