22FOCUS-JANUARY2013Pleaseturntopage24December1909PortPerryenactsaby-lawtoprohibitthesalebyretailofspirituousfermentedorothermanufacturedliquorsinthemunicipality.December1915ALocalOptionby-lawwasdraftedprohibitingthesalebyretailofliquorinthemunicipalityofPortPerry.Thebylawwassubmittedtopublicvoteattheannualelection.August1935ResidentsoftheVillageofPortPerryvotedx1cnox1dtotheintroductionofliquoroutletsinPortPerry.Theresultswere400againstto271infavour.November1954PortPerryvotesx1cdryx1dforthefourthtimesince1916.Votescastforestablishmentofaliquorstorewere560infavourand521opposed.A66percentvotewasrequiredtobringliquortothevillage.October1957JohnOrdewaselectedaschairmanoftheCitizenx19sCommitteetopromoteadvantageofcontrolledgovernmentliquorandbeerstoresintown.Morethan90percentofthelocalbusinessesvoicedtheirsupportforoutlets.November1957Thelargestturnoutever92percentapprovedlegaloutletsforbeerandliquorTIMELINEWiththePortPerryLCBOstorescheduledtore-locatetothewesternedgeoftownbymid-FebruarywhatbettertimetolookbackonPortPerryx19sstruggleswithalcoholoverthepastcentury.Wex19veconstructedax1ctimelinex1dtoshowsomeofthesigni0cantdatesandissuesrelatedtothesaleofalcoholintheLakeScugogareaandwillexplainhowthesubjectpolarizedthecommunityattimes.Thesaleofliquorinlocalstoresisrecordedasearlyas1857beingavailablefromGeorgeandMarkCurriewhosoldliquorandwinesaswellasdrygoodsandchildrenx19swearfromtheirgeneralstoreinPrinceAlbert.By1869licenseswerebeingissuedtothosewishingtosellx1cspirituousfermentedorotherliquors.x1dTheapplicanthadtoappearinpersoninfrontofthelocaltownshipclerktorequestax1ctavernorshoplicensex1d.Regulationsandenforcementcamewiththeprivilegeofacquiringaliquorlicense.Soitwasin1875aninspectorwashiredtoensurenoliquorwassoldinPortPerrybetween7p.m.Saturdayeveningsand6a.m.Mondaymorning-leavingtheSabbathfreefromthecurseofalcohol.InMarchthefollowingyearaTemperanceAssociationwasformedinManchester.Theirobjectivewasx1crepressingtheevilsofintemperanceandprohibitliquortraf0casabeveragethroughouttheDominionx1d.Despitethepopularityofthelocaltemperancemovementliquorlicensescontinuedtobeissued.In1877fourhotelsandtwostoresinPortPerryandeighthotelsinReachTownshipreceivedlicensestosellliquor.Oneoftheselicensesdated1884-85illustratedaboveisaddressedtoWilliamFlewellwhooperatedtheUticaHoteljustwestofPortPerry.Otherssatis0edtheircravingbysettingupcrudestillsdeepinthebushoutofthesightofinspectorstobrewhomemadeliquor.OnmorethanoneoccasionthestillswerelocatedandtheoffenderswerearrestedandtakentotheWhitbyCourthousetobetriedforsellingliquor.ChargesforsellingormakingliquorwerenotuncommoninparticularJohnOrdeledthemovementtovoteforbeerandliquorstoresinPortPerry.PROHIBTONtoSelf-SeRVe
