16FOCUS-JANUARY2013ForthecommunityofBlackstockintheformerTownshipofCartwrightthreatstoclosetheirbelovedCartwrightHighSchoolarenothingnew.Infacttherstrumblingsthattheschoolwasonborrowedtimecamemorethan40yearsago.x1cCartwrightHighSchoolwillbeclosedbyJune1973andthereisapos-sibilityitmaybeclosedattheendofthepresentschoolyearx1dwasthereportpublishedinanarticleinaFebruary21972editionofThePortPerryStar.ThatannouncementwasmadeatameetingoftheNorthumberland-DurhamCountyBoardofEducationattherecreationcentreinBlackstockwheremorethan200peoplecrammedthehalltohearthenews.ThendirectorFrankThorntoldthemeetingthattheBoardofEducationseriouslyquestionedthefutureoftheschool.x1cItisnotinconditiontokeeppacewiththewayeducationaltrendsaremovingtodayx1dhesaid.SoundfamiliarAlettertotheeditorofTheStarsignedby33studentsofCHSprotestedthepossibleclosureandurgedparentsandthecommunitytobandtogethertostopanyactionaimedatclosingtheirhighschool.Thiswasthecommunityx19srstvictorybuttimeandtimeagainoverthepastfourdecadesthesubjectoftheclosureofCHShasbeendiscussed.InApril1974adelegationof25residentsfromtheBlackstockareametwiththeDurhamBoardofEducationconvincingthemtokeeptheschoolopen.40yearfightCartwrighthasbeenghtingclosureoftheirhighschoolforfourdecadesPriorto1922studentsfromCartwrightTownshipwhohadnishedelementaryschoolandwantedtoattendhighschoolhadtwochoices.Theycouldat-tendeitherahighschoolinPortPerryorBowmanvilleanditwasattheirownexpense.Thestartofasecondaryedu-cationbeganinSeptemberthatyearwhentwoclassesweresetupintheBlackstockTownHall.Althoughthisadvanceseemedtosatisfysomethereweremanywhowantedapermanenthighschoolinthecommunity.AlmosttwoyearslaterinJuly1924avotewasheldandbyaslimmarginof45x18forx19and42x18againstx19adecisionwasmadetoconstructaschool.GeorgeMcLaughlinwasgivenacontractin1925toconstructaschoolwithtwoclassroomsateacherx19sroomandbasement.Thirteenyearslaterin1938localbuilderGeorgeCrawfordaddedtwoclassroomsashophomeeconomicsroomofceandlibrary.Thebasementwasalsoremodelledforwashrooms.Atthattimeitbecameax18GradeAx19ContinuationSchool.In1950itbecameahighschoolwithfourregularteach-ers.InJuneof1954Mr.R.P.Allinmuchbelovedteacherandprincipalretiredafter20yearsinCartwright.GordonPaisleywasappointedprincipalandheldthepositionfor31years.HeretiredinMay1984.In1974CartwrightHighSchoolcameundertheumbrellaoftheDurhamBoardofEduca-tionaftertheRegionofDurhamwasformedincorporatingCart-wrightintoScugogTownship.FilesfromCartwrightRevisited1983SesquicentennialbyDoreenM.VanCampBriefHistoryofCartwrightHighSchoolCartwrightHighSchoolinBlackstockwasopenedinthefallof1925asaschoolwithtwoclassroomsateacherx19sroomandbasement.
