Pictures can also be dropped off at Focus on Scugog office.Homemade aeroplane takes to the air in 1911This aeroplane was built in Port Perry and flown on Lake Scugog in 1911.It was towed by a couple of fast horses across the lake and it rose to a height of more than 70 feet before making a graceful landing. An engine was later added to the aeroplane.The plane was built by Port Perry pho-tographer Ross M. Jewell of Port Perry, whose studio was over Widdens store, (Royal Bank).Northern Star hydroplaneon Lake Scugog in 1939One of the most unusual crafts to fly the waters of Lake Scugog was this hydroplane,known as the Northern Star.The hydroplane was invented and built byJ.K Lawrence, brother of local pharmacistAndy Lawrence,and it had room for fourpassengers and the pilot.Although it lookslike an airplane,it never left the water. Itstarted service on the lake on July 1, 1939.Scugog Aviation operated at Lake Scugog lakefrontDuring the 1960s, Scugog Aviation, a small air company, operated four planesthe largest a five passenger Cessna 185 and three smaller one passenger aircraft from its base on Lake Scugog. It offeredaerial photos and recreational services, as well as aerial advertising. Scugog Aviation was owned by Ted Griffen and Jim Pengelly, and was located on the property now occu-pied by the Scugog Memorial Library.30FOCUS - OCTOBER 2019'
