4 FOCUS - JUNE 2019 to thank him for taking care of her vehicle, “not shafting” her, and “not treating her like a stupid woman.” That says it all. Paul and Gisele have three won- derful children. “As soon as their hands were big enough,” they were out pumping gas,” Paul recalled. That was back in the good old days of full service. Cam followed in his father’s footsteps; he is an auto technician, and teaches these skills at Durham College three days a week. When the business changes hands, Cam will continue to pursue his education to become a full-time firefighter. Paul described employee Mike Loth, an apprentice mechanic, “as like another son to me.” His only job has been working for Paul. Mike is moving on to Gary’s Custom Exhaust and Auto in Port Perry, and you might even see Paul helping out there during the busy tire season. The new owners are not planning on staying in the garage business, Paul explained. The gas pumps will continue to exist for customer con- venience, the store will be expanded, and there is talk of a drive through coffee window. The two other pop- ular fixtures on the property are expected to remain: Brad Puckrin’s produce truck featuring their famous sweet corn, and the chip truck. The house next door is being sold along with the gas station. “It turned out to be a wonderful location,” Paul noted, as nonstop traf- fic continues up and down Simcoe St. When he first opened the business, there were no traffic lights in town, and only one small subdivision –Kent estates. Flieler’s has been open six days a week (closed Sundays) for decades, but the new owners are planning to operate seven days a week. Paul and Gisele have great plans. Instead of arriving at work at 6:30 eve- ry morning for a 10-hour day, Paul will be taking his boat out to try his luck at fishing at their cottage in the Bon Echo Park area. Gisele has “a 43-year- old honey-do” list to keep Paul busy when the fish aren’t biting! She’s also enthusiastic about kayaking, reading, entertaining friends, their grandsons’ hockey games, visiting their grand- daughter in Newfoundland, a return trip to Switzerland, and “spending time with each other and falling in love again.” Wednesday May 8, 2019, Paul posed before opening the garage for the day.
