FOCUS - JUNE 2019 29 Being located in mining country, this is the premiere post secondary education choice for future geologists. “My mom has always been so supportive, and a great role model,” said Jenna, “She has always been on board with everything I have wanted to do.” At the time of this writing, Jenna was looking forward to going home to visit her family on Easter weekend. She also planned to get together with her best friend Brooklyn Brauer of Port Perry, another ambitious young woman, who was off to Nepal for a nursing placement for the summer of 2019. Speaking of travelling, Jenna has only been in an airplane a couple of times, once was a vacation to Cuba. She’s fine with flying, which is good, because she will spend a lot of time up in the air this summer, in planes and helicopters. The Haiti disaster prompted her interest in earth- quakes and tsunamis, the study of which is a specialized field of geology, suitable for a master’s degree. Once, while on the second floor of a building at school in Sudbury, Jenna experienced a minor earthquake her- self. “I thought someone just dropped something really big,” she recalls. Technology and equipment to predict, monitor and measure earthquakes all intrigue her, and she knows someone who works in this field. Monitoring can be done anywhere thanks to computers, she noted. “There’s the science behind earthquakes, and also the humanitarian aspect,” Jenna pointed out, adding that if people are forewarned, they can seek protective shelter, and avoid being victim to large falling objects. When not exploring environmental outcrops in the Yukon, Jenna looks forward to running and reading. She plans on packing her favourite J. K. Rowling novels. “I’m a Harry Potter nerd,” she admits. Living her life one adventure at a time, Jenna would love to go to Hawaii to see the volcanoes. “That would be a dream come true,” she concluded. By Lynn Campbell, Focus on Scugog Harry Potter nerd Jenna, said any spare time she has she will be reading or running.
