FOCUS - JUNE 2019 27 Geology student Jenna Whitney is off to the Yukon for the summer. Along with Jack, another third year student from Sudbury’s Laurentian University, Jenna has been hired by a mining company, which recently partnered with Victoria Gold. She’s not sure exactly what a typical day will be like, but they will stay at the main base camp in Whitehorse, and fly in by helicopter to search for mineral deposits. And gold! And maybe do some soil sampling work. Chainsaw training is a prerequisite, so they can cut their way through the bush, creating clear areas for heli- copter drop offs. “I’m so excited,” commented Jenna, who left in May, and is set to return back to Ontario in August. Her next stop after that is Quebec, for a field school course necessary to complete her degree. MODERN DAY jenna whitney An adventure for ......................
