4 FOCUS - AUGUST 2017 As any distance runner will tell you, success requires as much men- tal preparation as physical. “The learning curve was several years long. You have to learn how to maximize your efficiency, to push to get the best results without hurt- ing yourself. I never did qualify for Boston, but I did get my time under four hours.” The truly competitive athlete will never rest on his or her laurels, and in his 50’s, James rose to a fresh challenge. “I switched gears at the encour- agement of a friend. It gave me a second life as a runner.” James’ new test was trail running. Gone were the flat surfaces and straight lines typical of road runs; mother nature would carve his new paths. “Trail races are usually run through the woods in provincial or state parks. It took about a year to get my confidence. At first I was afraid of falling over rocks and tree roots.” His first taste of trail running – a 50K race near Syracuse – proved memorable. “We got the tail-end of Hurricane Sandy,” he laughs. “It was a surreal experience, through pouring rain and muck. But it was a great feeling after I dried out.” Training for further ultra-mara- thon (over 50K) events – increasing distances of 60, 70, and 80K would follow his outing at Syracuse – re- quired learning to vanquish a run- ner’s two greatest enemies, hydra- tion and nutrition. “Any distance runner will tell you it’s a painful experience to get those just-right, and that what works is unique to each individual. Watermelon is my favourite race- food, or sodium-laden soup…better than steak and lobster. And defi- nitely a cold beer afterward!” James was able to apply lessons he’d learned as a marathoner to his new passion. “I train strategically. And a running buddy’s impor- tant to get you out on those days when you don’t feel like it.” On race day, it’s the challenge at hand which inspires him. “I enjoy the mental component most, the way you feel after running for hours. I think-through any pain.
