10 FOCUS - AUGUST 2017 After 47 years in business, Floyd and Ruth Asselstine have decided to test drive retirement. The owners of Asselstine Country have been married for 37 years and they’ve also worked side by side in the family business. It was started in 1971 by Floyd’s father Vernon, who was looking forward to his 100th birthday on April 14, 2017. Originally there was a partnership between Floyd and his parents, Vernon and Vera. Floyd and Ruth bought out the business in 1986, and as Floyd says, “The rest is history.” Now that they are in their 60s, Ruth says that they decided to trade in working six days a week for enjoy- ing the retired life. They are looking forward to spending time at their cottage on Pigeon Lake in Buckhorn, and trailering their motorcycle across Canada on the back of their RV. That would be their prized DL 1000 white Suzuki. “Everything is alive on a bike,” says Ruth, who prefers riding on the back, although she did take her mo- torcycle course years ago. “I love the smells and the views.” The Asselstines Plan The Asselstines Plan The Asselstines Plan The Asselstines Plan The Asselstines Plan The Asselstines Plan A Sweet Ride Into Retirement A Sweet Ride Into Retirement A Sweet Ride Into Retirement A Sweet Ride Into Retirement A Sweet Ride Into Retirement A Sweet Ride Into Retirement PHOTO BY MARYANN FLEMING
