56 FOCUS - MAY 2017 THE OAK RIDGES MORAINE ADVENTURE RELAY is being offered for the eleventh year in a row. An enthusiastic team of volunteers has already started to plan one of the largest events of its kind in Ontario that annually engages 500 canoeists, runners and trail cyclists covering 160 km of beautiful Oak Ridges Moraine trail. The big event is on Saturday, June 10th. We are looking for Ontario residents to create and register rec- reational, corporate or elite teams. Many teams are formed from neigh- bours and friends in communities all across the Moraine, as well as further afield. Please consider start- ing your own team to compete in this exciting event. The relay course is point-to-point from Gore’s Landing on Rice Lake in the east, stretching 160km westward to King City. The course is divided into 14 relay stages of varying dis- tances consisting of water, road and trail portions. Refreshments will be provided at the check points that link stages. With the exception of the 2-person canoe stage, one team mem- ber will complete each stage; how- ever, an individual may do multiple stages. Thus, teams may consist of up to 15 members. The relay route goes through Scugog with the nearest check points at the Long Sault Conservation Area, the Purple Woods ConservationArea, and at the junction of Houston Road and Concession 7. Local volunteers will be staffing these checkpoints and cheering on the racers! Participating in the relay is a great team-building exercise and also em- phasizes the importance of physical activity to overall health. The relay is the major annual fundraiser for the Oak Ridges Trail Association, with proceeds from team entries and spon- sorships going towards improved signage, parking lots, boardwalks and maintenance equipment used to keep the trail clear and safe for all users. The price to participate in the event is $600 for a recreational or elite team. A corporate-sponsored team costs $2,000 to register. If you’re not up to competing, you could become a relay volunteer at one of the 15 checkpoints along the trail to record in and out times, supply re- freshments and advice, take photos, and cheer on the competitors! Onlookers cheer on the cyclist from team “Durham Divas” completing the Relay stage at the Purple Woods checkpoint, while the volunteer in the orange vest directs the racer in. Moraine Adventure Relay Get Ready for the June 10th! At the Long Sault Checkpoint, volunteers in their green tee shirts are in the foreground while participants with their bikes are in the background waiting for their team-mates to come in before they can start their stage of the Relay.
