44 FOCUS - MAY 2017 Maintenance, Telephone Reassurance, In-Home Respite, Exercise & Falls Prevention classes, Specialized Geriatric Support and more. Community Care Durham services are provided free of charge or for a minimal fee, and are administered through offices across Durham Region, including an office right here in Scugog. If you or loved ones experience mental health chal- lenges, CCD offers free services to help “COPE” with stress, anxiety and depression. This service is offered to adults, 16 years and older, and self-referrals are always welcome. In Scugog and across Durham Region, weekly support groups encourage participants to develop skills for managing emotional health. Kathleen Wells is the COPE Program Manager, and during her time facilitat- ing COPE groups Kathleen has seen many people benefit from the information, support and companionship that COPE services offer. Client John declares “Last year was my first walk, and it was a wonderful experience. It gives you a sense of self-worth, and lets us participate and be part of something bigger.” Kathleen says “People with mental illness often feel isolated from friends and family, and unable to discuss problems because they feel people won’t understand. Participating in the walk makes them feel part of a larger community. It makes them feel good.” Kathleen can be reached by calling (905) 985-8461 or by email at kwells@communitycaredurham.on.ca. Community Care Durham services are provided by staff and a roster of over 2,000 volunteers. In fact, Community Care Durham says their volunteers are the heart and soul of the organization! There are many inter- esting opportunities, and volunteers say that they receive as much from the experience as they give. Community Care Durham invites you to join their very special team of volunteers. Whether it is a few hours a week or a few hours a month, you can make a difference in someone’s life! If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please call 905-985-8461. For more information about the walk and how to participate, please call Jillian Howsam at 905-985-8461, email jhowsam@communitycaredurham.on.ca or visit the Scugog office at 16100 Old Simcoe Rd., Port Perry.
