Local historians and authors Paul Arculus and Peter Hvidsten will be presenting a slide show entitled “Reach and Cartwright Townships – to the Municipality of Scugog.” The presentation will include a slide show on Scugog’s history. The popular duo will talk about their explorations into the history of this community and reflect on its past, as well as present some rare and unusual glimpses into our local heritage. All are invited to bring artifacts or photos of the past to share at this time of reminiscence and reflection. Some of the authors’ books including Peter Hvidsten’s latest Rewind Scugog, The Eighties will be available for sale. The meeting gets underway on Wednesday May 10, 7:30 p.m. at St. John’s Presbyterian Church, 319 Queen St., Port Perry. As always, refreshments will be provided after the meeting. Scugog Celebrates Canada’s 150th Wednesday May 10 Lake Scugog Historical Society Scugog’s annual obsession with when the ice finally dis- appears from Lake Scugog has now been determined and will officially be recorded as March 25, 2017. On that afternoon, standing on the dock at the foot of Queen St., looking north as far as the eye could see, the lake was cleared of its icy shroud for another year. All that remained was a stubborn patch of dark slush, that clung to the surface in the bay south of the dock for about a day longer. The earliest day the lake has ever given up its icy grip was during the spring of 2012, when it finally receded on March 15th. As for the latest date the ice disappeared, that was more than six weeks later, on April 29, 1965. So there it is… everything you need to know about when the ice went out, at least until next year.
