Six business teams paddled their hearts out to be number one. Coming in first place was Precious Metal Paddlers (Dana’s Goldmithing), 2nd: Paula McMurtry Law Office, 3rd: Rosario Greco Styles and the three other teams who put up a good fight; Moving with Julie, Scugog Animal Hospital and Old Flame Brewing Co. On Monday August 22, twenty-four locals jumped on paddleboards and raced around a relay course raising critical funds for the Scugog Lake Stewards. Port Perry SUP created the Paddle of the Businesses with the help of Old Flame Brewing Co. The purpose is to ‘Take Back the Lake’ with a Paddle and a Pint. With historically low lake levels, many Scugog residents have seen more of ‘what lies beneath’ Lake Scugog. In short – a whole lot of (mostly) invasive weeds! The Scugog Lake Stewards are working with UOIT to conduct a multiple-year study of the lake. They are also working with the Township to evaluate the merits of going forward with a major dredging pro- ject for Port Perry Bay to get the lake back to a better equilibrium. Local businesses braved wobbling away on paddle- boards to participate in these neck-to-neck races, ending in a first place win by the Precious Metal Paddlers (Dana’s Goldsmithing), second place to Paula McMurtry’s team (2014 Champions) and third to team Rosario Greco Styles. Teams celebrated with dinner and drinks at Old Flame and raised just under $2,000 for the Scugog Lake Stewards. The trash talk has already begun for 2017! Paul Rogers proves that you can wear anything while paddling for team “Rosario Greco Styles”. Tracy McGarry showed fine technique paddling for the “Moving with Julie” team. These young cheerleaders were there to cheer on their mom on the “Paula McMurtry” team. Afraid of what lies beneath in Lake Scugog? You’re not alone!
