2 FOCUS - AUGUST 2015 Thumbs up from happy campers Dear Editor I would like to offer my THUMBS UP to the Day Camp run by the Scugog Townships Recreation Division. My granddaughter attended the first week of this summers day camp Clowning Around. The campers were provided with an assortment of age appropriate activities a chance to develop important social skills and a trip to the Bowmanville Zoo. She thoroughly enjoyed the week and cannot wait to go back for her second session in August. A special thank you to the wonderful counsellors Bubbles Jewells and Daisy. Mary Ann Versage Port Perry Roar by the Shores a great success Dear Editor The Roar by the Shores volunteer committee would like to thank all of the participants and attendees for contributing to the success of our third annual car show on June 21st. Mother Nature cooperated and there were over 140 vehicles on display. Also contributing to the success of our event was the front entrance gates parking attendants cooks student volunteers music and cold water and food vendors. We thank you for all your time and efforts as well. The show participants raised over 800.00 for the Uxbridge-Scugog Animal Shelter and the Scugog Lake Stewards. Without the support of our great community from businesses and individuals events like this would not happen. We hope to see everyone again next year. Mark your calendars - June 19 2016. Dave Roulston Port Perry Thumbs up to amazing young people Dear Editor Just when we think the world is a difficult place some wonderful thing happens to restore our faith in humanity. On Saturday June 20 2015 two young women used their talents to make the world a better place. Congratulations to Clara and Cameron Hick who organized an awe inspiring musical concert at Port Perry United Church involving a group of multi- talented students from Port Perry High to raise funds for the G-Moms. These amazing young people used their talents to improve the lives of the 25 million orphans and their Grannies in Africa by raising 822.00. The audience truly enjoyed beautiful music and the voices of the teenage performers. Everyone was simply asked to make a donation and the result was incredible. The G-Moms also enjoyed the concert and are definitely thrilled to accept their donation which will be forwarded to the Stephen Lewis Foundation. We stress that 90 of all monies from the foundation go directly to the projects we support. Tinie Evans on behalf of The Grateful G-Moms Port Perry Childrens Chorus celebrates a successful first season Dear Editor Singing friendship learning growing These are all membership benefits of the newly formed Port Perry Childrens Chorus. Under the musical direction of Cathy Pavlik with administrative expertise and percussion infusions from Suzanne Garriock and piano accompaniment skillfully provided by Jackie Crawford the kids choir has had a successful first season. Since last September Port Perry Childrens Chorus has given two concerts has performed as guests in three more and has participated in festivals and workshops. The highlight of the year was the choral workshop day where the Port Perry group hosted the Brooklin and Uxbridge youth choirs for a full day rotation of musical games and activities featuring massed choir and individual workshops with internationally renowned composer Nancy Telfer. This was an amazing opportunity to build both skills and relationships between our choral communities Cathy Pavlik said about the day. Port Perry Childrens Chorus meets on Tuesday evenings at 630 p.m. and is grateful to the Church of the Ascension for hosting our rehearsals. We are looking forward to continuing our vision of building musical literacy music appreciation and camaraderie in the way that only singing in a choir can do. The group is accepting new members and invites young people ages 7 and up to call for information and audition times. Please contact Cathy Pavlik at 905-985-9274 for details.
