FOCUS-SEPTEMBER201141OtherexecutivemembersincludedSecre-taryR.H.TomlinsonandTreasurerMarkCurrie.Theycreatedacompanywithmembersrequiredtopurchasesharesat5.00each.Thesaleofsharesraised535enablingthecommitteetobuyfromAbnerHurdaneightacreparcelcontain-ingalloftheburialsitesandspend300tohavethecemeteryfenced.Attheirx1rstmeetingtheboardalsodecidedtonameittheOntarioPineGroveCemeterybuttodayitismorefamiliarlyknownsimplyasPineGroveCemetery.InitiallyhomesandshopsstoodalongthewestsideofthecemeterywhichistheeastsideofJeffreyStreet.Itshouldbenotedthattodayx19sJeffreyStreetwasoriginallycalledQueenStreet.ThiswaschangedwhentheresidentsofQueenStreetinPrinceAlberthadtheiraddressesconfusedwiththoseonQueenStreetinPortPerry.TheoriginalHurdcemeterywasexpandedin1890andagainin1915toin-cludealloftheseJeffreyStreetproperties.In1890theboardpurchasedafurtherfouracresfromJohnJuryandin1915theLukepropertyfor800.00.Atthenorth-eastendofthepropertyisthex1cPaupersx19sectionreservedforthosewhocouldnotaffordtobuyaplotoraheadstone.Acasualwalkaroundthecemeterywillrevealthatin1875and1876almostahundredburialstookplaceinPineGrovetwicethenormalnumberforanycompa-rableperiod.Thiswasduetoatyphoidepidemicwhichtookitstollacrossthecountry.PriortothemidtwentiethcenturydiseasessuchastyphoidfeverandrespiratoryailmentssuchasT.B.andinx0uenzaweredeadly.Particularlyviru-lentoutbreaksoftyphoidfeveroccurredinthemid1860sandmid1870sandastronginx0uenzavirusappearedin1881.Unfortunatelythemostvulnerabletothesediseasesweretheinfantsandtheelderly.Threemonumentstypifytheoutcomeoftheseepidemics.1.TheFormanmonumentatallgreyneedle-likemonumentwhichliesagainstthesouthfencetellsusthatThomasFormanthechairmanofthecemeteryboardlosthiswifeMarga-retinApril1863his15-month-olddaughterJanetinApril1864andhisnine-year-olddaughterAnnieinAugust1865.FormanmarriedEleanorTaylorbutshelosttheirx1rstchildaninfantsoninJuly1866.2.Oneofthemostpoignantmonu-mentsinthecemeteryreadssimplyx1cJamesMoon1819-1896CatherineMarkhiswife1830-1916andninein-fantchildren.x1dResearchintheScugogMuseumArchivesrevealsthatonJuly201876theirdaughterSarahdiedoftyphoidfever.InSeptemberthatyeartheirdaughterSusandiedandexactlyaweeklatertheirdaughterMariasuc-cumbedtotheepidemic.Jamesx19brotherWilliamMoonofSeagravelosthisdaughterSusanalsoinSeptember1876.ThemonumenttotheMoonfamilyisasimplelowredgraniteslabafewme-tresnorthofthesouthentranceontherighthandsideofthedriveway.3.TheRobinsonmonumentatthesoutheastcornerofthecemeteryrex0ectsthetragediesofthe1881inx0u-enzaepidemic.GeorgeandElizabethRobinsoncelebratedthex1rstbirthdayoftheirsononJune61881.Aweeklaterhedied.Lessthanaweekafterwardstheirtwo-year-olddaughterFlorenceMaudealsosuccumbedtotheepidemicandthenGeorgex19s59-year-oldmotherMarydiedinOctoberfromthesamedisease.OnlyfouryearslaterGeorgeandElizabethx19s3-year-oldsondiedandtwoyearslatertheylosttheirthree-day-oldinfantsonNorman.Georgelivedforonlyanothertwoyearsafterthelasttragedy.Hediedin1889nodoubtfromabrokenheart.Elizabethlivedfor52yearsasawidow.PartTwoofPineGroveCemeterywillappearinnextmonthx19sissueofFocusonScugog.LocalhistorianPaulArculuswillsharehiswisdomandhumourdur-ingaguidedwalkingtourofPineGroveCemeterylaterthismonth.OrganizedbytheLakeScugogHistoricalSocietythispopulartourwilltakeplaceonWednesdaySeptember14.Thewalkwillbeginatthesouthendofthecem-eterytheoldestsection.Gravesoftherichandpoorthefamousandthehumblewillbecoveredinthewalk.Thestoriesrevealedinthisbeautifulcemeteryrangefromthetragicandheartrendingtothemysterious.Thereareevensomehumouroustalestobetold.Thewalkbeginsat630p.m.andlastsaboutanhourandahalf.ThereisnochargeforthetourbutacollectionfortheLakeScugogHistoricalSocietywilltakeplaceattheconclusionofthewalk.Everyoneisinvitedandremindedtobringanumbrellaincaseofrain.PineGrovecemeterywalkrevealssecretsofancestorsContinuedfrompage37
